What We Do

Our bread and butter is music licensing. For a lot of independent artists this can be unfamiliar territory. We try to make it easy and help you navigate the world of music licensing so that you get money and exposure without getting screwed. Seriously, when it comes to your music, the best thing you can do is to educate yourself to understand who's working with your music and what they're doing with it. This section of our site offers an overview of how we work. If you still have questions, take a look at out Frequently Asked Questions section, or contact our CARE department.

How it Works

A lot of what we do can be summed up by 3 simple words:
Listen. Connect. Solve.
This is a bit of a mantra around here.

After you upload your music to our site, the first thing we do is listen to all of the tracks. All of them. Every song that gets uploaded is heard by a human ear, reviewed and categorized. It is very important for us to hear your music, understand what you're about, make sure it meets our quality standards and tag it for our search. Once that happens, your songs enter our catalog and show up in the Discovery Tool, our private music search engine.

We then connect your music to clients and placement opportunities. There are a lot of ways that your music can be selected for an opportunity once it enters our catalog. We do hundreds of music searches each week for clients working in TV, film and advertising. Some of our clients also have direct access to the Discovery Tool, so they can find your music on their own.

Beyond placing your existing tracks, we also work with some of our artist on custom music opportunities. Sometimes our clients are looking for someone to create a new song with a specific feel, instrumentation or lyrics. If you have access to a studio or professional production capabilities at home, make sure to let us know when you sign up!

In a slightly different capacity, we frequently connect bands with opportunities that go beyond music placement. This includes collaborations with brands, live shows, video opportunities and a slew of other things. The more updated your profile is, the easier it is for us to find you when opportunities like these arise!

All of our services are designed to solve challenges for our clients and our artists. Obviously, we help our clients find the perfect music for their projects. We also help our artists solve some of the challenges of being an independent musician, by giving their music unprecedented exposure while putting money in their pocket!

What's in it for You?

How about cash?
First and foremost, licensing your music is obviously beneficial because you get paid. Music Dealers works with some of the biggest names in TV, film and advertising which makes our pool of potential opportunities that much bigger than the rest.

Performance royalties (more cash!)
This is a big benefit that too many independent artists overlook or don't understand. It is crucial for any working musician to register all recorded songs with a Performance Rights Organization like ASCAP or BMI. These organizations collect performance royalties from television and radio. When you license a song, you usually get an upfront fee for the track. Then after the song is used for a commercial or TV show, a performance rights organization collects royalties on your behalf and sends you a check! This is why it is so important to provide complete PRO information for each and every track you upload into our system.

Boost your career
Whether you're looking to eventually sign a record deal or remain independent, placing music in a commercial capacity can only help your career. Labels are always looking for a band or artist capable of making things happen on their own before signing a contract. If your plan is to remain completely independent, the money and notoriety gained from licensing your music helps you further invest in your career and supports your growth as an artist.
