Life-changing revelations can come at odd moments. For singer/songwriter Rachanee, it was during a job interview. Unable to choose between pursuing a career in music or a career in photojournalism, her interviewer Nancy suggested she flip a coin to decide which one to focus on for a year. "But," Nancy warned Rachanee, "picking one means completely giving up the other. So if it comes up photography, you stop writing songs, you quit the band, you put away your guitar.... Are you ready?" Rachanee replied, "Don't flip the coin." Five years and three albums after that fateful interview, Rachanee still tends to see the world in pictures, but they now manifest themselves in musical snapshots instead of through film. Now some of her latest musical snapshots are available in a special digital-only “09 Singles" collection. “Something speaks to me about the everyday human experience,” says the award-winning artist. “It’s the normal, mundane things that inspire me. There’s so much beauty and joy to be found in just living and sharing our lives if we really look for it.” And that’s the goal with these new songs, and ultimately every song Rachanee writes. Songs in the "09 Singles" collection include “Singing Down the Sun,” her self-proclaimed “ode to the road,” which shares the joys and woes of traveling in a made-for-driving song. Inspired by an actual criminal manhunt that occurred in the artist’s city, “Believe” serves as both an anchor for hope in troubled times and a call to action for people to build true community.
