Where are you guys from originally?
We’re both from Queens, NY
How long have you been creating/performing music?
We’ve made music in different incarnations since high school, and The American Dollar has been around since August 2005.
Can you describe your family member’s musical interests and abilities?
Johns dad played keyboards in bands his whole life, and also has many other musicians in his extended family. Rich’s dad played guitar when he was younger.
What is usually the first step in your creative process?
Finding a cool sound or cool progression, that is usually the starting point.
Say you’ve had a long, strenuous night, for some strange reason the next morning you feel very ill and smell of alcohol, how might you go about curing this ailment?
Probably just need to wake up and get to the next gig on time.
How different do you think peoples lives would be if music never existed?
It would be a much more sad existence, i know sometimes the only thing that can make me feel better is music.
What do you feel should be changed, or stay the same regarding the music industry?
As a 100% DIY act, we do everything ourselves from distribution to pressing to production on albums. It’s an efficient way to do business, you can control everything, make sure your products are ethically made etc. It’s cool to live in a time where such a possibility is possible with the internet etc. What i’d like to see changed is peoples regard for the independent artist, piracy is really pervasive and it’s not just bringing down Bono, but also making the smaller guys not be able to afford to live like humans.
How do you balance your music with other obligations - love, family, work?
It’s rough, probably my least favorite part.
What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
Our fondest memory that was mutually experienced was a show of 3 band we really love, American Analog Set, The Album Leaf and Sea Ray. Easily one of the best small shows we’ve ever seen. It was inspirational in creating The American Dollar.
If you could have 2 hours to completely control all of the radio stations in America, what would the playlist look like?
Lots of radioheads more out there stuff, a few tracks of ours and many tracks of friends of ours who deserve more attention.
Where do you see yourselves in 7 years?
