Rob's Music Dealers Artist Spotlight: Oh, Be Clever - Day 4 of 5 (Interview) 907 words · 5 minute read

How long have you been doing music for?

Brittney: Ever since I could breathe, I’ve been singing. Funny story, actually, when I was about 2 years old, my dad thought I would be tone deaf.

Cory: I’ve only been playing guitar and writing music since I was 14! I have no idea what I was doing before then.

Describe your sound in 3 words.

Passionate. Relatable. Loud.

Who are your influences?

Brittney: Oh this question gets me every time. Paul McCartney, first and foremost. I’m a very metaphorical lyricist, so most of my influences are in very thought provoking bands. Pink Floyd, Sia, Bob Dylan and, of course, Aretha Franklin.

Cory: Top 40, Screamo, Death Metal, Most Rap, and Benjamin Gibbard

What was the first record you bought?

Brittney: HAHA!! Don’t make fun, but N*Sync was the first tape I ever purchased. I was obsessed.

Cory: I bought The Offspring - Americana, it was my favorite CD for a really long time.

Craziest fan/show story.

Brittney: The craziest fan…hahaha! Well, there was this fan who was a little obsessed with me, personally. I remember he came up to me and said he knew all about me!!! That creeped me out. But I think the craziest show was Battle of the Bands 2008 at Club Sound in SLC. We were Armorette back then (Cory and I), and we were on the verge of breaking up. We were all fighting and hating each other, but we all agreed to just have fun and play with our hearts, not our heads. We played the most soulful show we’d EVER played. Everyone in the audience was going crazy and we actually ended up taking 1st place! It was the best feeling EVER.

Cory: I have yet to encounter a crazy or obsessed fan. They all go for Brittney. I want a crazy obsessed fan!

Brittney: INDIAN!!! Thai. Japanese. Anything food, really. I have the appetite of a full-grown man.

Cory: I like American food. A double double from In-N-Out will do me just fine!

Brittney: I’m about to get really cliché here.. Johnny Depp…Clint Eastwood…I love him so much.

Cory: I’ve always been a fan of Jim Carrey. I really like Edward Norton though. He sure is good.

Brittney: The Scarlet Pimpernel

Cory: The Shawshank Redemption

Brittney: Leo Carillo Malibu, California

Cory: Portland, Oregon

What is the worst job you have ever had?

Brittney: Call center…my attitude is too much.

Cory: Dish washer for a restaurant!

How do you like living in Utah?

Brittney: I LOVEEEEE the mountains and the BEAUTIFUL scenery that I’m surrounded by. The sunsets blow my mind. HOWEVER…as far as a creative environment goes…I’d pick another state.

Cory: No humidity, with every season, it’s a nice place to live. There’s not much going on here, but it gives me more time to work on music!

Explain a typical day for you.

Brittney: Get up. Get semi-ready (makeup, not my friend). Go to work and make people dead sexy (I do hair for a living). Go home. EATTTTT. Get on blackcabsessions and watch new artists until I can’t stay awake anymore. Oh..and don’t forget feeding my facebook addiction.

Cory: I start by taking my dog outside to do his business, then I leave to work. Talk to people on the phone all day about their TV services, while at the same time promoting my band online when my boss isn’t looking. Then I head home and work on music until the wee hours of the morning!

Since its just you two in the band - I’m sure you two spend a lot of time together. What is one thing each of you do that the other hates?

Brittney: Cory is one of a kind. :) He’s his own person and he is very set in his ways. I don’t think there’s really anything he does that I would necessarily say I HATE…but he has a hard time with interrupting me in our videos. THAT bugs me. But other than that…he’s like my brother..just like any bro/sis relationship, we get on each others nerves. But I would do anything for that guy as I know he’d do for me. We’re a family, for sure.

Cory: Brittney’s lying! I like to grow out my mustache from time to time in order to look really sexy for the ladies, and she hates that! She won’t be seen with me if I’m rocking the stache! I hate that she hates my facial hair!

Your song can be the theme for any TV show - what would it be?

Brittney: The Hills. HA I’m kidding. I don’t really think I know the answer to that question, but whatever it was, it would have to be something really AWESOME. ;)

Cory: I would choose Entourage. Because that show is awesome!
