For our fourth installment of #MDInterviews, we got to know the rising pop star, RAURA.
With addicting grooves, breathtaking vocals, and melodies that leave you craving more, anticipation for RAURA’s upcoming single, “Vanilla Cherry,” continues to climb. RAURA spent the first half of 2015 writing and recording her upcoming EP, “Neon Lovers.” Although she has a wide range of musical influences, her sound has most often been compared to Lorde, Rihanna, and Ellie Goulding. As RAURA gears up for a busy end of 2015, we caught up with her to chat about what’s coming next.
MD: Long time – no speak! I feel like we were just talking at the Hancock building yesterday. Thank you again for playing our Summer Concert Series on August 6th. Can you tell us a bit about that experience?
RAURA: Absolutely loved the experience! Being able to connect with so many different people right in the middle of downtown…it was incredible.

MD: You certainly brought great vibes into the evening. Your chemistry with your band seems very natural. How long have you been playing together?
RAURA: The guys are amazing. I think the chemistry comes out of us all being such great friends, doing life together day to day. Once we step on stage, we know each other so well, our synergy naturally takes over.
MD: Chicago’s music scene really seems to embrace unity. How do you feel that contributes to the music coming out of the city?
RAURA: Chicago’s tight knit culture is really what blows my mind about this city. It allows for an artist to feel completely vulnerable, and in that vulnerability…amazing things can happen.
MD: Well, this has been a busy summer for you from radio interviews and marketing to constantly performing around the city. We can’t wait to hear the new EP – can you tell us a bit about what’s coming next?
RAURA: I would love to. I’m excited to say that in just a couple weeks, my single “Vanilla Cherry” will be released. I had a lot of fun working on that song, and just as much fun working on the video. I also can’t wait to share my EP with you, but until then, you can hear a little of what’s coming on my site, RAURA.co.
MD: How would you describe Neon Lovers in 5 words?
RAURA: Now that’s a great question. Let me see…tension, passion, unconditional, lightheaded, sensual. I think that’s technically 6 words, but I tried my best!
MD: What’s been the most difficult part of the songwriting process for this project?
RAURA: I would say it’s being honest. I really dug deep and wrote from where I was at. During the writing process, I try to be as confrontational with myself as I can. Even though it gets hard, I write best from a place of honesty.
MD: How do you want your fans to feel when they listen to Neon Lovers?
RAURA: Alive, loved and inspired.
MD: Alright so now you’re the music supervisor – where does RAURA sync to screen best?
RAURA: Another great question! I write a lot about the ups and downs of love, so…probably best in films that are filled with the realities of what true love really means. It’s not always a fairy tale, but it can be. It’s not always heart break, but it might be. It’s not always perfect, but it tries to be. I think the tension within love is where you’d find my songs placed most often.
MD: There’s so much to look forward to – I’m excited to hear the new music. Thank you again for taking the time to chat today. We can’t wait for your intimate performance in our Chicago office this fall.
RAURA: Thanks so much for having me. I’m really looking forward to being with you all again!
